Is it time to give your wardrobe an update for Spring 2024?

Are you looking forward to shedding the winter layers and embracing your Spring wardrobe or are you dreading it?

It's easy to cover up beneath layers and coats in winter, but once the sun starts to shine it gets more difficult to hide.

You've felt comfortable wearing your dark neutral colours while the weather's been dingy and dank, but now the days are lighter and brighter, you'd like to go for more colour, but you're having a hard time figuring out which ones.

Well you're in luck, because I've got some suggestions for your Spring update.....

Mr P pink cotton sweater - personal shopping for men in London

A pink jumper?! Yes really! Sometimes it's the most adventurous thing you buy that ends up being your favourite, and you know this will go seamlessly with all the navy, grey and black you have in your wardrobe.

Or if you want to push the boat out a bit more, you could create an exciting new combination like the one shown above. Introduce this chocolate brown into your trouser rotation, and just add a neutral beige jacket - or switch the colours around with beige trousers and a brown suede jacket.

It's a simple way to create a more interesting outfit by putting unusual colour combinations together - this combo reminds me of Neapolitan ice-cream too - yum!

Sirplus cornfield yellow linen shirt - personal stylist for men

What could be more Springlike than this cornfield yellow, which will instantly give your wardrobe a lift.

If you're not used to wearing much colour, then break yourself in gently, and start by wearing it under a navy crew neck jumper with jeans. This way you have the safety of your favourites but with a touch of newness at the neckline.

Then come Summer, you'll be ready to wear it on its own with lightweight navy trousers, or with a taupe linen suit, or for weekends with chino shorts or faded denim.

But beware.....it may attract compliments.......like the yellow jumper my client recently bought did! (See below for testimonial evidence!)

Arpenteur cotton linen jacket - personal stylist for men in London

So this may not look quite as Springy as the others but realistically I'm sure I'll be buying this sort of thing on upcoming shopping trips with my clients in the next few weeks.

It's nice and lightweight, so you could wear it now with a t-shirt and sweater......the pink one from above would look great......and if you want to add a little extra creativity to your outfit, then tuck one of Drake's beautiful cotton bandanas into the neck of your sweater.

It'll also be perfect for summer evenings with pale blue or ecru jeans or stone chinos like the ones below.

Green cotton linen 'ADN' jacket - Arpenteur at Trunk Clothiers - £365

Slowear beige tapered fit trousers - men's personal shopper in London

If you want to start moving away from slim fits but you're not yet ready for a baggy or wide leg, then take some baby steps with these.

They come with a pleat to add a little width at the top but have a tapered leg so don't completely overwhelm you with fabric. Also, it doesn't start to be a headache to figure out what shoes to wear with them.

I know some guys are nervous of wearing lighter coloured trousers but they not only add a Spring feel to your wardrobe but they'll double the amount of outfits you have to wear too. So if you're suffering from an overload of blue in your wardrobe, and don't have enough variety, then a pair of contrasting colour trousers can really help.

Plus, quite a lot of the clients who buy Incotex trousers with me on a personal shopping trip tend to go back for more.....you've been warned!

Tapered fit trousers in 'ice crepe' Crinoline cotton - Incotex at Slowear - £320

Reproduction of Found German army trainer - personal styling advice for men

I've just recommended these trainers to a client.....I'd been racking my brains as to where I'd seen them before (Trunk Clothiers) so was pleased to find them again on a different site. If you love wearing trainers but are bored with a plain white leather, and want something a bit smarter than the chunky coloured ones that are everywhere, then these are a safe bet.

As the name suggests, they're a reproduction of a German military trainer, so have that vintage feel about them - which personally I love. They'd be smart enough to go with a casual blazer on top if you want to wear them for a smart/casual look or put them with cargo pants and a sweatshirt for weekends.

Dark brown German army trainers - Reproduction of Found at Peggs & Son - £220

Are you fed up with your wardrobe as it is but dread shaking off the winter layers to reveal worn out shirts and scrappy looking t-shirts?!

Here's my latest fabulous five star Google review!! (you can see the other 39 reviews here!):

"Excellent experience. Like many others, I suspect, I had arrived in middle age with a smart wardrobe and a casual wardrobe, but not too much in the smart-casual middle! And anything I did have was navy or grey!

I started with a colour and style consultation, which was very helpful and identified a range of possible colours that I would not normally consider wearing. Sarah stayed longer than expected (a good thing!) and included a mini wardrobe edit as part of the bargain. In addition to the colour and style elements, it was useful to cover hair styles, glasses and accessories. This was also an excellent prep session for a shopping trip.

For the shopping trip, Sarah was very well prepared, having visited many of the shops beforehand to identify suitable options and put things aside. This made the process very painless. We found everything on our list, from a smart casual jacket to gloves (which nailed my request perfectly!). It was useful to have someone independent to comment on the colour, style and fit (to the jealousy of some of the other shoppers, I noticed) but Sarah was not at all pushy and we agreed on most things! Sarah also did some things that I would never have done on my own - like ask for discounts and take out items purchased in other shops to compare - all very helpful!

Sarah followed up a few days later with an app that shows how I can wear my purchases in various combinations. It also included items that we liked but, for whatever reason, didn't purchase at the time. When I told Sarah that I had bought some of those items, she promptly updated the app to include further outfits featuring those items - excellent service!

A couple of weeks on and I have certainly learned a lot. I am very happy with my purchases and slowly trying out my new outfits. A number of people have already complimented several of my new items (including a yellow jumper that I love). Well worth it - and something I am looking forward to repeating in a few months. I do recommend taking the next day off to recover though!"
